Ethiopian Defense Forces 

The governemts of Sudan and Ethiopia established a joint military force to monitor their common border. Ethiopian Defense Minister said the agreement was amid at defending the two countries from aggregation and outside attack. Tigrai Online an Ethiopian online news website quoted the Ethiopian Defense Minsteer Siraj Fegessa as saying, "Giving priority to neighbouring countries, we have made agreements with these nations in the region to prepare a joint plan aimed at ensuring and safeguarding our common borders save with Eritrea. The agreements include working jointly in the field of education, training, experience sharing, and on common issues to work together on peace and security demands in the region"The gallant Ethiopian defense forces.

Since the first foundation stone was laid on the Grand Renaissance Dam (GRD) Egypt has shown its eternal belligerence towards Ethiopia, demanding Ethiopia honor the 1929 and 1959 Colonial treaties. At times Egypt walks out from the negotiations; at times it pretends to go along with the agreements but refuses to sign the Nile Basin Treaty; at times Egypt demands more studies to be done, refusing to accept various studies done so far; at times it threatens it would wage war. And it continues to harp on its “Historic Right” over the waters of the River Nile.

Abdelatty, spokesman of Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, said: “Ethiopia should also respect colonial-era agreements and the 1959 accord between Sudan and Egypt that allocates all of the river’s flow excluding evaporation to those two nations… By 2020, Egypt will require all of its assigned 55 billion cubic meters a year for vital use such as drinking, washing and sanitation”

Recently ‘FACT’ magazine, in its February 2006: issue 34 publication; have put out an article by Tewodros T/Aregay under the title ‘How old is the Defense force or army?’ What served as an ‘inspiration’ for this article was; the emotional roller coaster that followed the laying of cornerstone for the construction of the first ever National Martyrs' Monument on the premises of ‘Tor Hailoch’, to be build to honor and glorify the martyrs that had lost their lives in the name of peace, development and democracy.
So, I would like to finish by raising one fact.  That is it doesn’t take any fancy calculation to find the exact age of our army. Because everybody knows that it’s been eighteen years since the army’s establishment; in which it includes an unbelievable valorous struggle to maintain the unprecedented economic growth and uphold long lasting peace. Therefore, our army is always ready and alert to uphold its constitutional duty, to make the anti-poverty struggle successful and guarantee our path to renaissance.
